After race at Galway Tue, 30th Jul, 2024 (1st)
We went a nice gallop. He had the experience coming into the race. He had some really solid form behind him. I'd say they were surprised he hadn't won his Beginners(chase) until now. We had been thinking of going for the Galway Plate so he would have wanted to do that in this grade and had finished fourth in a Grade 1 three runs ago. The Plate was in my head all summer but when he was beaten in Tipperary, I had a chat with Martin (Cooney) and we decided to stay in calmer waters. Rachael gave him a super ride and he jumped super. He is now still a novice for the season so we'll exploit that and we're hoping he will mix it in graded company during the winter. He has only been out of the money a few times when he had reasons and thanks to Martin for keeping him, as there were times he could have sold him. I'd love to have more like him but what generally happens to stables like ours nowadays is the likes of him are sold and taken by bigger owners and trainers.

To be honest Galway was a rush job and he missed ten days two weeks out from the race and I shouldn't have really gone there but it was the aim for a long time. It was a mistake by me to send him,. He definitely took a blow in the dip there in a very competitive race, this was calmer waters, and he needed to be 110 percent going into it but was probably just short. I didn't have to do much after that, that put him right. He's come here against a lesser grade and won well. He's a lovely horse, the last day is the first day he was ever out of the money. He wasn't expensive as a store and he's been a really good servant to us and hopefully he's got another good year ahead. He's still a novice up until Christmas so we'll try and exploit that if we can.

He's a cracking horse, he's done us no wrong. He missed a year after his point-to-point with an injury and it probably stood to him really. A lot of people were questioning would he handle the ground, but he has never got to run on that ground with me taking chances running him on good ground. He would want to have been doing that - we were going to go for the Albert Bartlett if we got in, but we didn't get in. He will be better up in trip in time. It is great for his owner, Martin Cooney. When he got injured he stuck with him and he is repaying him now, so hopefully he will go on to maybe a novice hurdle before the season is over. Maybe Fairyhouse or Punchestown. He is game and he digs in when you want it. He's from a family of good staying chasers.

he is a lovely horse. He missed a year after his point to point and it was the making of him as he has strengthened up into a lovely horse. He was very good in Galway when he wasn't fully ready and won subsequently. All the form has worked out and this race worked out nicely. It broke up a lot to be fair and John Gleeson was top class and is going places. He'll go hurdling now and might develop into a nice novice hurdler. He'll handle soft ground. The horses are running well so long may it last. I have to thank Listowel for the top class ground they have and for the way they treated the lads in the stable yard. There was free food and the owners were looked after superbly and everyone was raving about it. Even today the place is packed and they are putting bigger racecourses to shame with the crowds. Fair play to the committee.

I'm delighted with that. He had a lovely run in Galway, he stayed on and John gave him a lovely ride there and minded him,. I was a little bit worried that it had gone too quick for him today but to be fair they put plenty of water on it. I walked it and was happy enough. John gave him another lovely ride and I'm delighted for the owner Martin Cooney, it's his first horse with me. He ran well in a point-to-point but we put him away for a while and gave him a chance to develop. He should make a nice hurdler and will go with an ease in the ground. We might see what is in Listowel for him, there might be a winners bumper there. Martin will be going down there so we'll probably pitch him in there.
