An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Thoughtfully (IRE), ridden by Dougie Costello and trained by Pam Sly, which jumped right-handed leaving the stalls and raced towards the rear of the field under apparent tender handling to finish twelfth of fourteen runners, beaten by 20½ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the filly failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Costello stated that his instructions were to jump well and stay on the stand side and ask for an effort approaching the 2 furlong marker.
He added that Thoughtfully (IRE) ran keen in the early stages of the race; a fact he reported at Scales, and that when travelling past the 3 furlong marker Thoughtfully (IRE)’s run had flattened out and continued one-paced towards the line.
Sly confirmed the instructions and stated that she was satisfied with the ride given on its debut run for her.
She further added that she felt the filly may appreciate faster ground rather than the Heavy ground here at Yarmouth or a switch to an All-Weather surface, possibly over six furlongs in the future.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Dougie Costello, the rider of Thoughtfully (IRE), unplaced, and Thomas Greatrex, the rider of Socru (IRE), unplaced, both reported that their mounts ran too free.
Chris Wall reported that Hi Ho Silver (GB), unplaced, was never travelling and was unsuited by the going, which was officially described as Heavy on this occasion and would prefer a faster surface.
