Permission was given for STREAK OF LIGHTNING (IRE) to go early to post wearing a red hood and for DEVIL’S ANGEL to wear a red hood to post.
The Starter reported that DEVIL’S ANGEL was the subject of a third criteria failure.
Ben Haslam was informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Abolish (GB), ridden by Andrew Mullen and trained by Iain Jardine which was held up in rear under considerate handling before being asked for an effort approaching 1 ½ furlongs out and finishing 9th beaten 3 ¾ lengths.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The rider stated his instructions were to hold the horse up in last place and creep into the race.
The rider added that he knew the gelding well and Abolish (GB) was best suited by being held up and asked for an effort as late as possible.
Mullen further added that he was outpaced through the early part of the race and had been further back than he would have liked but he was unable to take closer order due to the gelding being outpaced.
He added that he had made an effort from inside the final 2 furlongs, but Fortamour (IRE) had drifted right in front of him meaning he had to switch left before being able to make his challenge.
He further added that the gelding had then only run on through beaten horses.
The trainer confirmed the instructions by telephone and added that he was satisfied with the ride in the circumstances as he felt that the Abolish (GB) had been out-paced in the early part of the race.
Their explanations were noted.
