An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Stumps Or Slips (IRE), ridden by Mr James Jeavons and trained by Tom Weston, which was ridden towards the rear of the field, before being asked for an effort shortly before turning into the home straight and then staying on well under apparent tender handling to finish ninth, beaten 34 ½ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
Being a 7lb claiming amateur, Mr Jeavons was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
The trainer was interviewed and shown videos via video link; and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Stumps Or Slips (IRE), failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Mr Jeavons stated that his instructions were to get the gelding settled as he had raced keenly both to post and in the race on his only previous start over hurdles at Doncaster on 27th November.
He reported that the gelding had again gone freely to post and in the initial stages of the race before settling well.
Stumps Or Slips (IRE) made a mistake at the fourth hurdle before jumping well down the back straight where Mr Jeavons stated that he was anxious not to ask the gelding to improve his position to avoid him becoming keen at that stage of the race.
The rider continued that turning out of the back straight he moved wide to begin to improve his position, which he continued to do so under tender handling before making a bad mistake at the third last hurdle.
Following this Mr Jeavons' main priority was to get Stumps Or Slips (IRE) to jump the last two flights safely, after which he asked the gelding for substantial effort whereupon he did not improve his placing anymore with regards to those horses around him.
Weston confirmed the instructions and added that he was satisfied with the ride given.
He highlighted Stumps Or Slips (IRE) lack of progress under a hard drive after jumping the last hurdle and added that in his opinion the gelding would either not have finished as close or the race at all if Mr Jeavons had asked him for more substantial effort sooner.
Their explanations were noted.
