Permission was given for both Diamond Jill (IRE) and Bronze River (GB) to be mounted in the chute and to go early to post.
Grace McEntee, the rider of IT’S A LOVE THING, was asked to explain her riding in the second half of the race as the gelding had travelled in mid-division throughout the race and appeared to be tenderly handled in the home straight to finish last of ten runners, beaten by 8¼ lengths.
The Stewards interviewed McEntee and viewed recordings of the race after which she explained that she was instructed to ride the race accordingly, but as there was a strong pace on paper, she was minded to not be too prominent as she didn’t want IT’S A LOVE THING to race keenly like the gelding is minded to do on occasions.
She added that leaving the back straight the gelding didn’t quicken like it had in previous races and rounding the bend had lugged slightly right-handed off the rail before staying on at the one pace down the home straight.
She further stated that as IT’S A LOVE THING had failed to pick up, she felt it prudent to finish the race with a hands and heels ride and look after the gelding.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of IT’S A LOVE THING failed to reveal any abnormalities.
McEntee’s explanation was noted.
Following the race, Kieran Shoemark reported that Eloso (IRE), placed fifth, hung right; David Probert reported that Diamond Jill (IRE), unplaced, became upset in the stalls and Luke Morris reported that Bronze River (GB), placed sixth, reared as the stalls opened and was slowly away as a result and also ran too free.
