Permission was given for Aria Rose (GB) to be mounted on the course and the gelding also wore earplugs throughout.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Simon The Great (GB), ridden by Rex Dingle and trained by Ella Pickard, which was held up in last place on the first circuit before improving its position down the back straight on the final circuit whereupon it appeared to be considerately handled until jumping the final fence and staying on to finish third of thirteen runners, beaten by 4½ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions had been to drop in and get Simon The Great (GB) settled before then riding the race as he found it.
Dingle explained that he had found himself further back than intended on settling due to a fast early pace and the fact that the gelding had been slowly into stride after being slightly baulked by Amangiri (IRE) which was led in at the start.
He added that Simon The Great (GB) had travelled strongly throughout and jumped well on its chasing debut.
He further stated that despite the gelding being inclined to lug left-handed on the final circuit, he had been able to creep into the race and make ground between weakening runners down the back straight.
He had put himself in a more competitive position having jumping the second last fence, however after making a strong challenge from approaching the final furlong, the gelding's run had flattened out late on and in his opinion Simon The Great (GB) had stayed on one-paced to obtain the best possible placing.
The trainer stated that Simon The Great (GB) can be a buzzy type, who wears a hood and has a history of running freely.
She confirmed the instructions and stated that she was satisfied the ride accorded with those instructions.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Adam Wedge reported that Finvarra (IRE), which was pulled up, had stopped quickly.
The Veterinary Officer reported that Amangiri (IRE), which was pulled up, bled from the nose and Cawthorne (GB), which was pulled up, lost his right-fore shoe.
