Permission was given for SMEATON’S LIGHT (IRE) to go early to post wearing a red hood.
An enquiry was held to consider two incidents of interference involving Newyorkstateofmind (GB), unplaced, ridden by Lewis Edmunds, Q Twenty Boy (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Isobel Francis, Churchill Bay (GB), placed fourth, ridden by John Fahy, and Poet (GB), unplaced, ridden by Jefferson Smith.
In the first incident, approaching 3½ furlongs out, Fahy was suspended for 2 days for careless riding as he allowed his mount to move left-handed towards the rail when not sufficiently clear of Poet (GB) causing Smith to take a check.
In the second incident, shortly after, the interference was found to be accidental in that Poet (GB) had remained tight for racing room and unbalanced on the rail as a result of the interference from the previous incident, at the same time as the runners to his outside edged marginally left-handed when rounding the bend.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 1½ furlongs out involving Churchill Bay (GB), placed fourth, ridden by John Fahy, and Papa Cocktail (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by George Wood.
Fahy was suspended for 3 days for careless riding as he was slow to prevent his horse from drifting right- handed causing Wood to take a significant check aboard Papa Cocktail (IRE).
The performance of Newyorkstateofmind (GB), which finished last of the ten runners, beaten by 11½ lengths, was considered.
It was noted that Chris Grassick could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance other than Newyorkstateofmind (GB) was forced to race wide on occasions throughout the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Following the race, Jefferson Smith, reported that Poet (GB), unplaced, suffered interference approaching 3 furlongs out.
