Prior to this race, Martin Keighley was asked to explain the reason why he was running Big Nasty (GB) here at Cheltenham on going described as Soft, having reported that the gelding would prefer a quicker surface following its run at Wetherby on 4 December 2021 when the ground was officially described as Good to Soft.
Keighley explained that in his opinion the ground at Wetherby had been holding and tacky, but having walked the course today, he felt that the Soft ground here at Cheltenham would be suitable for Big Nasty (GB) on this occasion.
His explanation was noted.
Whilst jumping the second last fence, Big Nasty (GB), placed fourth, jumped slightly left-handed, making contact with The Wolf (FR), placed second, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.

Heskin, the rider of the The Wolf (FR), placed second, was suspended for 2 days for using his whip above the permitted level from turning into the home straight.
Harry Bannister, the rider of the Smooth Stepper (GB), placed third, was suspended for 2 days for using his whip above the permitted level from after jumping the third last fence.
Following the race, Richard Patrick reported that Honest Vic (IRE), which was pulled up, jumped poorly throughout.
The Veterinary Officer reported that Undersupervision (IRE), placed sixth, was showing signs of post-race ataxia.
