When he got there he looked around and I nearly won on the bridle. I really like him, he's a huge big imposing horse and to go around this track first time and win is not easily done. I think he has a bright future and could go back to seven or stay at a mile. He's a very big horse and I'd imagine whatever he does this year is a bonus. A P O'Brien, trainer
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Alaskan Son, placed second, ridden by W.J. Lee, and trained by David Wachman. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer's representative concerned. W.J. Lee, stated that he spoke to the trainer over the phone who told him that this is a nice horse but a little green. He instructed him to get him into a rhythm, give him a good education but not to knock him about. He was a highly-strung horse in the spring and he didn't want to blow his head but get a good racecourse gallop into him today. He stated that the horse was fit and the going was close to ideal. In the race he started to push at the three pole but didn't want to ask him fully in the dip as it was his first time out. Initially there was no response but he pushed away and the penny dropped in the final furlong. He felt he got the horse to run as well as he could. He didn't use the whip as he didn't feel he needed to as the horse was doing his best already. The trainer's representative, Eoin Lane, stated that he felt the horse got a good education from the rider today but couldn't confirm the instructions as he wasn't made aware of them. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Alaskan Son was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards referred the matter to the Referral Committee under Rule 147 (v) as the trainer's representative had not been fully informed of the riding instructions.
