An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Broughtons Chief (GB), ridden by Barry McHugh and trained by Philip McBride, which after breaking on terms from the stalls was heavily restrained in the first furlong to settle at the rear of the field before staying on in the home straight under a hands and heels ride to finish eighth, beaten 4 lengths.
McHugh and McBride were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Broughtons Chief (GB) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to jump out and get cover to switch the gelding off as it has a tendency to run freely and this was its first run over 1 mile.
McHugh explained that the gelding ran too free in the early stages, a fact he reported at Scales, and that having got cover at the rear of the field, Broughtons Chief (GB) became further lit up as Irish Eileen (GB) improved to his outside and he therefore made the decision to keep and settle the gelding away from other horses.
He added that Broughtons Chief (GB) is a big scopey type and to ensure the gelding remained balanced, he encouraged Broughtons Chief (GB) around the bend before asking for his effort once he had turned into the home straight.
The trainer stated that those were the instructions, and he was satisfied that the ride accorded with the instructions.
He added that Broughtons Chief (GB) is an inconsistent type at home and has had issues with movement and was returning after a 112-day break.
Ideally, he would prefer to run the gelding on a more galloping turf track, but due to Broughtons Chief (GB)’s low rating, he has limited options.

Following the race, Connor Beasley reported that Irish Eileen (GB), unplaced, reared as the stalls opened.
