An enquiry was held into the running and riding of all beaten horses after the winner Wanaasah (GB) (IRE) had been allowed to establish a sizeable uncontested lead through the early and middle stages of the race.
Georgia Dobie, the rider of Fearless Warrior (FR), placed second, Elisha Whittington, the rider of Dance To Paris (GB), placed third, William Carver, the rider of PURDEY’S GIFT, placed fourth, Sean Davis, the rider of Cotton Club (IRE), placed fifth, Thomas Greatrex, the rider of Monjeni (GB), placed sixth, William Cox, the rider of Forth Bridge (GB), placed seventh, Pierre-Louis Jamin, the rider of AUTHOR’S DREAM, placed eighth, Ben Robinson, the rider of Divine Gift (IRE), placed ninth and Toby Eley, the rider of PRACEPS (IRE), placed tenth, were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
Dobie stated her instructions gave the option to make the running if required, but it was the geldings first run over 2 miles and she felt that Fearless Warrior (FR) was going as quick as he could for much of the race by maintaining her position detached from Wanaasah (GB) (IRE), but 15 or 20 lengths clear of the remaining runners, a fact she reported at scales.
Whittington stated her instructions had been to get cover and she felt her mount was outpaced throughout, a fact she reported at scales.
Carver stated his instructions had been to drop the colt in and switch him off.
He added that Purdey's Gift (GB) had missed the break and that entering the back straight on the final circuit was unable to improve his position, due to being held in a pocket by Cotton Club (IRE), which meant after being denied a clear run for some distance he then had to steady and angle widest leaving the back straight to make his run.
Davis stated his instructions were to drop the gelding in, get cover and try to produce Cotton Club (IRE) as late as possible.
Greatrex stated his instructions were to settle around midfield but to ensure he had cover throughout.
Cox stated his instructions were to be around mid division, but importantly obtain cover.
Louis- Jamin stated his instructions were to jump out and be prominent, however Author's Dream (GB) had been slowly away, which meant he raced further back than intended.
Robinson stated his instructions were to drop in and find a nice rhythm on the gelding which was having its first run over 2 miles.
He added that Divine Gift had over-raced throughout and did not stay the trip.
Eley stated his instructions had been to jump out and get a good position, but to ensure he obtained cover.
He added that Praeceps (IRE) had stopped quickly from the 5 furlong marker, a fact which he reported at scales.
All riders indicated that they considered the early pace was very quick and not sustainable, therefore feeling that the leader would weaken and come back to them in the latter stages, with only Davis and Greatrex expressing some concern that Wanaasah (GB) (IRE) was getting a mid-race breather whilst maintaining its lead.
Davis explained that making any mid-race move on his mount would've been contrary to both his instructions and the geldings established racing pattern and Greatrex explained that whilst he considered improving his position going out on the final circuit, he was reluctant to be the runner which chased the tearaway and carted the rest of the field into the race.
The riders stated they had asked their respective mounts for a finishing effort in the back straight and with the exception of Carver on Purdey's Gift (GB), which had been unlucky at a crucial stage of the race, all were of the opinion that no horse would've finished any closer, had they been asked to quicken from further out.
Having heard their evidence, the explanations were noted.
