Permission was given for Runswick Bay (GB) to wear a hood in the Parade Ring only; Le Crunch (FR) wore earplugs throughout the race.
An enquiry was held following a report from the Veterinary Surgeon that Chester Williams, the rider of Le Crunch (FR), had acted against his instructions to allow the gelding to be loaded into the horse ambulance after Le Crunch (FR) had been pulled up entering the back straight.
The rider and the Veterinary Surgeon were interviewed and recordings of the incident were viewed.
Having heard their evidence, Williams’ explanation that he was not completely clear of the instructions given to him by the Veterinary Surgeon and as Le Crunch (FR) is known to be difficult, had required two people to hold the gelding and reared up and knocked a member of ground staff over who was assisting before almost breaking loose from his hold, he felt it was in the best interests of Le Crunch (FR)’s welfare for him to lead the gelding back to the racecourse stables, was noted.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Le Crunch (FR), which was pulled up, was lame on its right-fore.
