An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Gastara (GB), ridden by Mr David Turner and trained by Johnny Farrelly, which raced keenly in rear in the early stages before latching onto the main group halfway down the back straight on the final circuit and stayed on under a hands and heels ride in the home straight to finish eighth, beaten by 38 lengths.
The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, revealed Gastara (GB) to be displaying a prolonged recovery rate.
The rider stated his instructions had been to settle Gastara (GB) towards the rear of the field as the gelding has been known to race keenly, before making progress in the later stages.
He added that the slow early pace of the race had contributed to Gastara (GB) pulling hard and again running keenly.
He further added that Gastara (GB) had both hung and jumped left-handed throughout which had made it difficult for him to ask the gelding for an effort in the closing stages.
The representative of the trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that she was satisfied with the ride given the circumstances.
Their explanations were accepted.
Entering the bend past the winning line on the first circuit, a green-running Everglow (GB), placed second, slowed rapidly, causing Mister Timmytucks (GB), unplaced, to be switched off heels which in turn caused the winner, Star Gate (IRE), to be taken off its racing line, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved.
