An enquiry was held into the running and riding of the horses which made ground on the winner, Be The Difference (IRE), which had been allowed to establish a sizeable lead having grabbed hold of the bit in the middle stages of the race.
Miss Natasha Cookson, the rider of Atomic Angel (GB), placed third; Mr Thomas Easterby, the rider of You Some Girl (IRE), placed fourth and Mr Toby McCain-Mitchell, the rider of Copper Beach (IRE), placed second, were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
Being a 7lb claiming amateur, Miss Cookson was offered the opportunity to be accompanied but declined.
Miss Cookson stated that her instructions were to sit handy and ride the race as it developed.
Miss Cookson explained that she was aware of the sizeable gap and asked her mount to chase down the leader towards the end of the back straight on the final circuit.
Mr Easterby stated that his instructions were to get cover, which is how the mare is normally ridden in all of her races, and progressively pass horses as the race developed as she only has one run, but he was caught in a pocket behind runners.
Mr Easterby further explained that he was aware of the margin between the eventual winner and the remainder of the field but felt it would have been unnecessary to change his tactics due to Be The Difference (IRE) setting what he considered to be too hard of a gallop.
Mr McCain-Mitchell stated that his instructions were to ride Copper Beach (IRE) with cover while keeping a good hold of his head as the gelding can be thick winded and felt that asking for an effort to chase down the winner, going against the instructions given would have been unnecessary taking into account that he felt that Be The Difference (IRE) had set too fast of a gallop under a relatively inexperienced rider.
The three riders were unanimous in explaining that they felt that the gallop being set by Be The Difference (IRE) was unsustainable over 3 miles 1½ furlongs and were of the opinion that the winner was going to weaken quickly in the home straight.
Their explanations were noted.
