Permission was given for New Agenda (GB) to wear a hood in the Parade Ring only and for Farmer Boy (IRE) to go early to post.
The Stewards noted that Fransham (GB), unplaced, was reluctant to jump off whipping round carrying Farmer Boy (IRE), unplaced, alongside him, causing both horses to lose many lengths at the start.
After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Fransham (GB), ridden by Kielan Woods and trained by Pam Sly, which after lining up well with the field then whipped round as the start was effected causing the gelding to lose several lengths at the start.
As a result, Fransham (GB) raced detatched, joining the rear of the field leaving the back straight on the final circuit, where the gelding appeared to be tenderly ridden in the home straight to finish tenth of the eleven runners, beaten by 41 ¼ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and stated his instructions were to follow the leaders as he has done on previous occasions and to not ask for an effort too soon.
He added that turning into the home straight on the first circuit Fransham (GB) was still detached from the rest of the field and Woods was easing the gelding into the race gradually to prevent his run from flattening out.
He further added that when turning out of the back straight on the final circuit he had made up sufficient ground to be in contention with the rest of the field but having lost a significant amount of ground in the early stages, the gelding had emptied.
Therefore, he felt it prudent to hold the weakening Fransham (GB) together in the home straight to ensure that he jumped the final hurdle safely and finish the race.
Given the circumstances surrounding Fransham (GB) being slow to start and the fact that he made a mistake at the final hurdle, in his opinion, he felt that the gelding had obtained the best possible placing.
His explanation was noted.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Chelsea Flyer (IRE), unplaced, bled from the nose.
