Approaching the finish line, the winner, Fossos (IRE), lugged right giving a nudge to Better By Far (IRE), placed second, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Fossos (IRE).
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Plastic Paddy (GB), ridden by George Buckell and trained by Michael Appleby, which, having broken level, was slow into stride and was ridden along at the back of the field before staying on in the home straight under a hands and heels ride to finish sixth, beaten 6 lengths.
Buckell was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
Buckell explained that his instructions were to ride the gelding as he found it although he understood it was to achieve the best possible placing.
He stated that due to the fast early pace he dropped to the rear of the field and into the kickback which Plastic Paddy (GB) didn’t face, which he reported at Scales, and lost even further ground.
He added that despite asking the gelding for its effort rounding the bend, he made little progress so he rode him in the home straight under hands and heels passing tiring rivals which had gone hard early on.
His explanation was noted.
