Red Moloney put a poor run in the Winter Derby at Lingfield behind him with a fine display, giving away weight to his seven rivals. Kevin Prendergast said afterwards that he believes the horse does not take well to travelling (he also ran below par at Galway last year) and will keep him for races nearer to home in future.

Alarazi was the subject of sustained support, backed from 9/2 in the morning to end up joint favourite. He appeared to hit a flat spot early in the straight, but was staying on in the closing stages and grabbed second place close home. He had also finished strongly when fourth in the Irish Lincoln on his seasonal debut and will certainly win races at this level.

Macarthur never got in a blow and seemed to carry his head quite high. He can be somewhat excused his first of the season, but is one to be wary of until he produces a performance in keeping with his reputation.
