P J McDonald, the rider of Intercessor (GB), drawn 7, was slow to remove the blindfold resulting in his horse being slowly away.
McDonald’s explanation that the gelding had been fractious in the stalls and turned its head sharply just prior to the start being effected, causing him to lose his grip and be late removing the blind was noted.
Rounding the first bend, Beat The Breeze (GB), placed seventh, hung badly right-handed carrying the winner, Cochise (GB), very wide on the track, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Following the race, the representative of John Butler reported that Never Surrender (IRE), unplaced, was unsuited by the going, which was officially described as Soft, Heavy in places on this occasion but was changed to Heavy following this race and would prefer a faster surface.
