Madden happy to lose weight for big win
The trip suited and he jumped great. I just had to sit on him for a long as I could and have one go on the leader going to the last. I had to miss dinner and a breakfast. I do like my food but it's worth it when you get races like that. I took a chance and went over to Harry Fry's this season. He's been very good to me and I've had a good few winners since I went over. I had a Grade 2 winner at Cheltenham last week and hopefully it can go on to bigger and better things. He was a bit unlucky at Fairyhouse the last day. Niall gave him a lovely ride and rode him with a bit of confidence. The better ground helped, and we have Teacher’s Pet who is a half-sister. The family seem to like a bit of better ground.
Apple's Jade impressive in Mares Hurdle
She’s a very good mare and that was a great performance. I doubt if she will jump fences next year and the Mares Hurdle or the Stayers are possible targets for her. I was heart-broken leaving here last night but that equals Willie’s record of 193 winners in a season. I said coming here that if I could equal that it would be something. Of course I wanted to win (the trainers championship) but at least that is something good.
Bapaume lands Champion 4YO for Mullins
I think we got the tactics right in that race. Mega Fortune was the one to try and beat and it worked out. Bapaume has kept his form all season and is a fantastic horse. I’d imagine that he will stay hurdling next season but whether he can step up again next season we’ll see. It’s tough for four-year-olds the following year.
Power strikes again with Codelco
He didn’t travel as well as he did at Aintree. The ground was a bit deeper today and he’s more of a good ground horse. We are only learning how good he is,. I suppose we’ll look at the Hennessy as he’s that type of horse, and in the spring he could be a National horse.
Team Mullins on target again with Open Eagle
He was a good novice and we intended going chasing with him this year but he got a small setback. He might run back on the flat later in the summer. He likes a bit of a dig in the ground. It was another fine ride by Patrick. He’s riding well this week.
Vocarium looks nice sort for Fahey
He’s a nice horse and has done everything well at home. The last day those colours were worn was when Owega Star was killed at Listowel (in 2015 Kerry National) and we were always waiting for a nice horse for them. For a big horse he can go away on nice ground, and hopefully he will go on to better things.
