Prior to this race, Tim Vaughan was asked to explain the reason why he was running Bells Of Peterboro (IRE) here at Chepstow on going described as Heavy, having declared the gelding a non- runner at Exeter on 23 February 2024 on ground with the same official description.
The trainer stated that after walking the course, in his opinion the ground was riding better than the official description and he was therefore happy for Bells Of Peterboro (IRE) to take its chance on this occasion.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approaching the bend, involving Gentleman At Arms (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Harry Atkins, Conkwell Legend (GB), unplaced, ridden by James Best and Monmiral (FR), placed fourth, ridden by Freddie Gingell.
Being a 7lb claiming Conditional, Atkins was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
Atkins was cautioned for careless riding as he allowed his mount to drift left-handed without sufficient correction causing Conkwell Legend (GB) and Monmiral (FR) to be short of room on his inside.
The performance of Walking On Air (IRE), which was pulled up, was considered.
The representative of Nicky Henderson could offer no further explanation for the gelding’s performance, other than confirming the rider, James Bowen’s report that Walking On Air (IRE) stopped quickly.
The Veterinary Officer examined the gelding during routine testing and reported that Walking On Air (IRE) had lost its right- fore shoe.
Following the race, Jack Tudor reported that Thanksforthehelp (FR), unplaced, became unbalanced and stumbled as a result on the first bend, leaving the back straight, the Veterinary Officer reported that the gelding was showing signs of post-race heat stress.
