An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Kells (IRE), ridden by Frederick Larson and trained by Michael Appleby, which was dropped in the rear and Larson appeared to wait for his effort until the home straight, finishing sixth of thirteen, beaten by 4 lengths.
Being a 7lb claiming apprentice, Larson was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the colt, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to ride the mount to stay the trip and to hold on to the colt’s head as Kells (IRE) is not a good mover.
He added that he was intent on following the instructions, which resulted in him being slightly detached from the horses in front of him as the pace increased down the hill.
He further added that he made up the ground quickly and, in his opinion, his mount failed to stay the trip.
The trainer’s representative stated they were happy with the ride and that it accorded with the instructions given.
Their explanations were noted.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 1 furlong out when Exmoor Beast (GB), placed eighth, ridden by Levi Williams, interfered with Torbellino (GB), unplaced, ridden by Adam Kirby.
Being a 7lb claiming apprentice, Williams was offered the opportunity to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
Williams was cautioned for careless riding as he allowed his mount to drift left-handed without sufficient correction causing Kirby to take a check.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Clockers Corner (IRE), unplaced, had bled from the nose.
