An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Mr Escobar (IRE), ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by W P Mullins, which having raced from a handy position had been eased up shortly after being denied a clear run upon entering the home straight to finish ninth, beaten 5¼ lengths.
The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any clinical abnormalities.
Moore stated that he had been given no specific instructions other than to ride Mr Escobar (IRE) as he found him and be mindful that the gelding has a tendency to hang left-handed.
He further noted that despite being a five-year-old Mr Escobar (IRE) had only had three runs.
Moore explained that the gelding had hung badly left-handed throughout, and he had to ride Mr Escobar (IRE) on a very tight right rein, but was happy with the gelding’s early position and whilst rounding the final bend he had shifted right-handed away from the rail to give him more options in the home straight.
Moore continued that Mr Escobar (IRE) was hanging left-handed and thereafter had been denied a clear run between Haku (IRE) and Pons Aelius (IRE) and his only option for a clear run was to switch left-handed which he was reluctant to do as his mount was shifting left-handed in close proximity to the runners which had improved up his inside.
This was evidenced on the recordings by the rider of Ehteyat (GER) having to steady slightly and as such Moore had stopped encouraging his mount forward.
Thereafter, Diamond Bay (GB) had improved to the inside of Mr Escobar (IRE) and as such Moore was concerned with regard his mount’s racing manner and could not persevere with his ride as a result.
Moore added that with hindsight taking his chances by staying on the inside rail may have been a better option.
The representative of the trainer stated that considering the circumstances they were satisfied with the ride.
Their explanations were noted.
Leaving the stalls, Forge Valley Lad (GB), unplaced, jumped left-handed, carrying Khadaash (GB), placed fifth, onto the winner, Carzola (IRE), resulting in that filly becoming momentarily unbalanced and Khadaash (GB) becoming short of room, causing its rider to take a check, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved.
