An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Editeur Du Gite (FR), ridden by Joshua Moore and trained by Gary Moore, which was restrained at the start and raced in rear throughout before appearing to be tenderly handled from leaving the back straight to finish sixth of six, beaten by 27¾ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, shortly after the race, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to get the gelding to relax, find a jumping rhythm and to get EDITEUR DE GITE (FR) to run as well as he could.
He explained that the gelding was very free in the early stages, which affected his jumping fluency at the first three fences.
He added that the pace was very strong throughout and despite this fact, it still took him a long time to get Editeur Du Gite (FR) settled and jumping better.
He further added that he was mindful of the gelding’s early exertions and therefore did not want to place him under full pressure too far out in a race the gelding appeared out of his depth in.
He also stated that in his opinion after being unable to quicken with the other runners approaching the home turn, he considered the safest way to navigate the final three fences in the home straight was to hold the horse together and ensure it finished the race.
The trainer stated that the ride accorded with the instructions given and although the gelding had ruined his chances by refusing to settle, he was satisfied with the manner in which Editeur Du Gite (FR) had been ridden.
He added that the gelding had stopped quickly on its previous start at Sandown when returning from a long absence.
He further explained that the gelding had 20lbs and upwards to find on ratings with every runner in the field on this occasion, before advising that it was now their intention to experiment with more positive tactics in an endeavour to find the key to ensuring Editeur Du Gite (FR) settles better in future.
Their explanations were noted.
