An enquiry was held to consider whether David Noonan, the rider of Finisher (USA), which finished last of six Finishers, beaten 129¾ lengths, had continued in the race when his horse appeared to be fatigued and only just clambered over the final hurdle.
The rider was interviewed, and recordings of the incident were viewed.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination showed the gelding to be recovering within normal parameters and that Finisher (USA) had lost its right fore shoe.
Noonan explained that although Finisher (USA) had been under pressure from a long way out, in his opinion the gelding still had sufficient speed and momentum to safely jump the final hurdle until being distracted by Some Spin (IRE) pulling up quickly in front of him, which caused Finisher (USA) to lose concentration and decelerate considerably on the approach contributing to the untidy jump.
His explanation was accepted.
The Clerk of the Scales reported that Nick Scholfield, the rider of Templier (IRE), placed second, trained by Katie Stephens, had weighed in at 10st 4lbs, having weighed out at 10st 2lbs.
The rider, the trainer and the Clerk of the Scales were interviewed.
Stephens was fined £290 as when the girth Scholfield weighed out with did not fit the gelding, rather than source a replacement from the rider or his valet, she had used one of her own bigger girths instead.
Following the race, Paul Webber's representative reported that Hello Sunshine (FR), which was pulled up, had a respiratory problem and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the mare failed to reveal any abnormalities and the Veterinary Officer reported that Megaudais Speed (FR), placed third, lost its right hind shoe.
