R. Coakley, rider of Artistic Integrity (GB) trained by J.Larkin, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount suffered slight interference two furlongs out. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of I Will Excel, ridden by S.P. Davis, and trained by M.D. O'Callaghan. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. S.P. Davis, stated that his instructions were to jump out handy and try to get some cover close to the pace before delivering his challenge late on. He added that his mount ran free in stages before hanging badly right in the straight . M.D. O'Callaghan, confirmed his instructions and added that the horse can be very difficult and needs to be delivery late. He confirmed his satisfaction with the ride, given the circumstances. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that I Will Excel was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered and took no further action. R.P. Downey, rider of Poetic Choice (GB), trained by Keith Henry Clarke, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount had to check in the early stages.
An extended handicap for three yrs old and upwards (70 = 9st 10lb) Weights - Top weight in the original handicap; shall not be less than 9st 10lb Penalties - (after calculation of the handicap) A winner shall carry 5lb extra; for each race won.
