Permission was given for Major Robinson (IRE) to go early to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Beaufort (IRE), ridden by Gavin Sheehan and trained by Warren Greatrex, where the gelding appeared to be tenderly ridden throughout the race, finishing thirteenth of sixteen, beaten by 76 lengths.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Beaufort (IRE), immediately after the race, failed to reveal any abnormalities and that a further examination, an hour later, also failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to get the gelding to relax and to obtain the best possible placing.
He added that the gelding was very unruly at the start and did not jump well, with a tendency to carry its head very high.
He further explained that Beaufort (IRE) was flat out at the end of the back straight when the pace quickened and that in the home straight, he felt that the gelding had not more to give.
The trainer’s representative stated that he was satisfied with the ride and that it accorded with the instructions given.
He added that he felt that Beaufort (IRE) would probably benefit from a trip in excess of 2 miles.
Sheehan was suspended for 14 days and Greatrex was fined £3,000 for schooling and conditioning the horse on the racecourse in that Beaufort (IRE) appeared to be ridden without substantial effort from Sheehan with the intention of getting the gelding to finish the race.
Beaufort (IRE) was suspended from running in any race for 40 days.
Following the race, Paul O'Brien reported that Calgary Tiger (GB), unplaced, ran too free and Harry Skelton reported that Frankeur (FR), unplaced, whipped round at the start.
