The winner, Maiden Castle (GB), appeared to show improved form, compared with its previous run at Sandown on 23 July 2020 where the gelding finished thirteenth of sixteen runners, beaten by 28 lengths.
Henry Candy’s representative attributed the improvement to a screw from an operation earlier in its career having been removed from the near-fore pastern of the gelding since its last run.
Their explanation was noted and Maiden Castle (GB) was routine tested.
Approximately 2 furlongs out, Locked N' Loaded (GB), unplaced, was disappointed for a clear run between Secratario, unplaced, and Candelisa, placed third, which edged marginally left-handed, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Candelisa.
An enquiry was held to consider interference just inside 1½ furlongs out involving the winner, Maiden Castle (GB), ridden by David Probert and Repaupo (USA), placed sixth, ridden by Kieran O’Neill.
Probert was suspended for 2 days for careless riding as he manoeuvred right-handed for a gap when not sufficiently clear of Repaupo (USA), giving a sizeable bump to the gelding and taking it off its intended line.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 1 furlong out involving High Commissioner (IRE), placed second, ridden by P J McDonald and LOCKED N’ LOADED, unplaced, ridden by Barry McHugh.
McDonald was cautioned for careless riding as he allowed his mount to shift left- handed when not sufficiently clear of LOCKED N’ LOADED, causing McHugh to check the gelding in its run.
Following the race, P J McDonald reported that High Commissioner (IRE), placed second, was slowly away and Kieran Shoemark reported that Louis Treize (IRE), placed fourth, ran too freely in the early stages of the race.
