An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Breffniboy (FR), ridden by Robert Dunne and trained by Johnny Farrelly, which was settled towards the rear of the field before making ground approaching the home turn to finish fifth, beaten by 20¾ lengths.
The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post- race examination of the gelding, shortly after the race, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to drop Breffniboy (FR) towards the back of the field in order to allow the gelding to relax and have plenty of sight of its hurdles as this was Breffniboy (FR)’s first run over obstacles and the gelding had not been finishing its previous races in bumpers.
He added that Breffniboy (FR) raced a bit keenly in the early stages and made several jumping errors, particularly at the second last hurdle.
He further added that having asked the gelding to close up on the leaders turning for home he felt that there was very little response and he therefore felt it prudent to keep a hold of Breffniboy (FR) which appeared to him to be tiring and the gelding had subsequently been slowly away from the final hurdle.
The representative of the trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that she was satisfied the ride accorded with those instructions.
