Barry has been second for us in the past and that's his first win for us. He's a good jockey and timed it well today. She is owned by the West To Easy Syndicate, which are brothers Michael and Louis Conway who are Galway and Dublin based. Mrs D A Love, trainer
D.E. Mullins, rider of Omega Springs, trained by Liam Casey, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount jumped high and was out paced in this race. John W. Nicholson, trainer of Swift, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his charge cut out at the top of the hill but scoped clean afterwards. R. Loughran, rider of Youngnedofthehill, trained by Shane Nolan, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount jumped green and poorly early on and only got jumping in later stages. Owing to the low lying of the sun, the Stewards granted permission for the third last hurdle to be omitted for the remainder of the card. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Omega Springs, ridden by D.E. Mullins, and trained by Liam Casey. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. D.E. Mullins, stated that his instructions were to get his mount jumping, to race mid division and to do the best he could, bearing in mind that his mount was an older horse having his first run over fences. He said his mount jumped clean and high over all his fences having given him plenty of light and he was surprised with this, as he would normally expect older hurdlers to jump low and fast. He felt he was travelling well having climbed the hill, but was outpaced thereafter for a time and as a result was further back than he would have liked. He added that his mount may need further and the down hill finish did not suit his mount as he was flat to the boards. He said he could see why the Stewards wished to interview him following the ride as he could have been stronger, but a more vigorous ride in his opinion would not have helped him finish any closer. He finished by saying that he would expect his mount to improve from this run. Liam Casey, trainer, confirmed the instructions given and expressed his satisfaction with the ride. He felt his charge would benefit from a longer trip in the future and intended to run him again over fences as he is well exposed over hurdles with a rating of 83. He further added that his charge would be better suited to a track with a longer straight as his previous runs over hurdles had shown. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, who stated that Omega Springs had a small wound on the right hind but was otherwise post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that both rider and trainer were in breach of Rule 212(a). Having taken both records in this regard into account, the Stewards suspended D. E. Mullins for 5 racedays and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. Furthermore, the Stewards fined Liam Casey ?2,000 and suspended Omega Springs for 42 days. . The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Youngnedofthehill, ridden by R. Loughran, and trained by Shane Nolan. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. R. Loughran, stated that his instructions were to settle his mount in rear, to try and get him jumping and to do the best he could. He said his mount was very up tight having gone down to the start early and kept this up throughout. He said his mount never relaxed over the fences and if he had pressed his mount any harder he felt he would have ended up on the ground. Shane Nolan, trainer, confirmed the instructions given and expressed his satisfaction with the ride. He stated that his charge is a very difficult type and very hard on himself. He added that he only has the animal since July, that he is trained from the field as he has burst in the past, that he wears a hood in an attempt to calm him down and goes into the parade last and leaves early. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, who stated that Youngnedofthehil was found to have a small wound on the right fore, but was otherwise post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.
