Permission was given for Country Kitten (IRE) to be mounted in the chute and to go early to post wearing a red hood.
An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after two separate incidents of interference, the first on the final bend, and the second after jumping the last, involving the winner, Sandalwood (FR), ridden by Tom Buckley and Picks Lad (GB), placed second, ridden by David Bass.
Having considered the evidence and reviewed the recordings, the Stewards were of the opinion that the interference caused by the first incident on the final bend had improved the placing of Sandalwood (FR) as the gelding had drifted right on to the rail rounding the final bend when insufficiently clear of Picks Lad (GB), causing Picks Lad (GB) to have to take a significant check and consequently lose considerable momentum, and that the momentum lost was more than that of the winning distance of a neck.
Furthermore, Sandalwood drifted left handed after the last hurdle intimidating Picks Lad (GB) off its intended line in the closing stages of the race.
The placings were revised as follows: First: Picks Lad (GB); Second: Sandalwood (FR).
Buckley was suspended for 4 days for careless riding as he allowed his mount to drift right-handed onto the rail without sufficient correction, resulting in Bass having to take a significant check.
Buckley was cautioned for careless riding as he allowed his mount to drift left handed after the last hurdle on the run to the line intimidating Picks Lad (GB) off its intended line.
Following the race, Max Young reported that Country Kitten (IRE), which was pulled up, was unsuited by the going on this occasion, officially described as GOOD to SOFT, SOFT in places, and would benefit from a quicker surface.
