I think he might not have been the strongest finisher the last few years but maybe he might have improved a bit. Paul W Flynn, trainer
The Stewards interviewed D.E. Hogan, rider of Rathealy, placed third, trained by Kevin Prendergast, concerning the fact that he appeared to stop riding for the last few strides and finished a head behind the second placed horse. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who stated his horse got very tired in the last 50 yards and had no more to give. He was of the belief he wouldn't have finished second if he rode to the line and added that this was his first ride back after injury and he was tired also. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards gave D.E. Hogan the benefit of the doubt and took no further action other than to advise him in future to ensure he rides out to the line. The Stewards interviewed James Doyle, rider of Joyeuse (GB), placed second, regarding his riding of this filly. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. James Doyle stated that he was hoping to get his filly to settle, so that she could finish out her race well and so he dropped her out. Turning in he thought he was still going well enough to win and after getting her balanced and organised he went about winning his race but she failed to pick up like he had anticipated. At the line he stated he was struggling to hold onto second place. He was of the opinion a flat track and slower ground may be his filly's preferable conditions and if he was to bounce his filly out and be handy she could get lit up surrounded by horses and not get home. Having viewed the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations of the rider.
