The Stewards enquired into the circumstances surrounding the fact that B. T. O' Connell, rider of Merrion Row, trained by P. J. Rothwell, appeared to pull up in the closing stages before re-entering the racing line and finishing ahead of horses placed by the Judge. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that he had tried to pull up his mount but was unable to do so before his mount carried him back out onto the track. Having considered all the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of Rule 215 and cautioned him in this regard for the future. The Stewards requested a report from C.Byrnes, trainer, as to the apparent improvement in form of Baresi, placed first, as compared with its recent form. The trainer reported that his charge had jumped poorly on his previous run and subsequently never got into the race. He added that the first time application of cheek pieces and a more positive ride today, had in his opinion, brought about today's improved performance. Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanation offered. An extended handicap steeplechase for five yrs old and upwards (116 = 11st 10lb)
Weights - Top weight in the original handicap shall not; be less than 11st 10lb
Penalties - Winner of a steeplechase after calculation of the handicap to carry 6lb extra for each such steeplechase won. Any horse rated above 116 shall initially be treated as having that rating and the highest weight allotted shall be 11st 10lb. Subsequently, the excess over 116 in any rating shall be added to the weight allotted to that horse. (For the purpose of this note, any five year old rated above 116 shall have the applicable weight for age allowance then prevailing deducted from the horse's rating prior to the original calculation of the handicap)
