Prior to this race, Nigel Hawke was asked to explain the reason why he was running Kendelu (IRE) here at Wincanton on going described as Soft, Heavy in Places, having reported that the gelding would prefer a quicker surface following its run at Huntingdon on 26 December 2021, on ground described as Soft.
Hawke explained that he was happy to run Kendelu (IRE) on softer ground over a shorter trip of 1 mile 7 furlongs here at Wincanton, but following the race, Hawke reported that he would refrain from running the gelding on Soft going in the future.
An enquiry was held into the riding of The Cincinnati Kid (FR), ridden by Nick Scholfield and trained by Henry Oliver, in particular with regards to his riding in the second half of the race.
Scholfield was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
He stated that The Cincinnati Kid (FR) is historically a weak finisher and a horse that needs to be kept on the bridle for as long as possible.
He added that this was the gelding's first run on ground this soft and therefore he kept out wide, tracking Pittsburg (IRE), in an attempt to try and conserve energy by racing on the fresher ground.
Turning into the home straight he asked the gelding for an effort, who tired immediately, whereupon he felt it prudent to nurse The Cincinnati Kid (FR) home over the final two hurdles.
He further stated that he felt the gelding was unsuited by the going, which was officially described as Soft (Heavy in Places), and this was confirmed over the telephone by Henry Oliver, who reported that The Cincinnati Kid (FR) would prefer a quicker surface.
His explanation was noted.
The apparent improvement in form of the winner, Pilsdon Pen (GB), which had never previously been placed, was considered.
Jeremy Scott explained that the gelding appreciated the Soft, Heavy in Places going on this occasion, having only raced on quicker ground before, and that Pilsdon Pen (GB) is a big horse who has taken time and one who appears to be improving with every run.
His explanation was noted and the gelding was routine tested.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Pittsburg (IRE), placed fifth, lost its left fore shoe.
