Tom Eaves was questioned regarding his riding of The Gloaming (IRE), placed fourth, approaching the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.
Eaves stated that he had no specific instructions from the trainer and just allowed the filly to find her feet early and settle where she was comfortable, off a pace he considered to be strong.
Eaves explained that approaching the 2 furlong marker he was obliged to take a precautionary check when concerned about becoming short of room between Mystify Me (GB) and Miss Bella Brand (GB), which had hung right-handed off the heels of Kinderdijk (GB).
He added that approaching the home turn, he was in two minds whether to take a run up the inside rail and to the left of Miss Bella Brand (GB) which was still hanging right, or continue coming between runners to improve his position and ultimately had exercised the latter option due to reservations about potentially running out of racing room behind weakening runners on the rail.
Eaves further explained that approaching the final furlong, rather than take the gap between Donny Marlow (IRE) and Miss Bella Brand (GB), he felt the higher percentage option was to switch The Gloaming (IRE) right-handed across the heels of Donny Marlow (IRE) to avail himself of clear running out wide, as again he was concerned that Miss Bella Brand (GB) had raced greenly off the home bend and shifted right-handed, giving the impression the aforementioned run would close as a result.
He indicated that the filly had found the line pleasingly in the final furlong when able to be placed under maximum pressure, and would be suited by a step up in trip on future runs.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of The Gloaming (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
