Leaving the stalls, Debit Card (GB), placed third, jumped awkwardly and shifted right-handed bumping SHE’S SOPHIE, unplaced, which in turn hampered Tidewell (GB), placed second, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of any horse.
Leaving the stalls Roystan Girl (GB), unplaced, jumped right-handed inconveniencing Emerald Lady (IRE), unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 1 furlong after the start involving Bankrupt (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Joey Haynes; Jam Tart (GB), unplaced, ridden by Elisha Whittington and Royal Cygnet (GB), unplaced, ridden by Darragh Keenan.
Keenan gave evidence over the telephone.
Haynes was cautioned for careless riding as he allowed his mount to drift slightly left-handed when insufficiently clear, causing a free running Royal Cygnet (GB), to be tightened for room, which in turn briefly hampered Jam Tart (GB).
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Tidewell (GB), ridden by Lewis Edmunds and trained by David Barron, which after being hampered coming out of the stalls, raced just worse than midfield on the rail throughout before staying on well under apparent tender handling in the home straight to finish second, beaten ½ a length.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race whilst the trainer was interviewed by telephone; and the Veterinary Officer reported that two post-race examinations of Tidewell (GB), which was routine tested, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Edmunds stated that his instructions were to let the gelding jump out and find a nice rhythm before riding the race as he found it.
Edmunds reported at Scales that Tidewell (GB) had made a respiratory noise and moved poorly in the back straight.
Edmunds explained that he considered the early pace was fast and he allowed the gelding to find its feet early after receiving a bump on jumping out of the stalls.
Edmunds added that he started to squeeze Tidewell (GB) along approaching the 2 furlong marker to hold the back of the winner, Sweet Glance (GB), and as the gelding is a big raw type, he was then focussed on keeping it balanced with a good hold of its head in the home straight.
Edmunds further indicated that inside 1½ furlongs out he became concerned that Debit Card (GB), placed third, had started to move towards the inside rail and was therefore reluctant to fully commit his mount to that runner’s inside for fear of being tightened if that horse’s shift continued.
Edmunds continued by saying that when he eventually took the gap to the inside of Debit Card (GB) approaching the ½ furlong marker, even allowing for the fact the pace had fallen apart, Tidewell (GB) had quickened up and stayed on pleasingly in the concluding stages.
Barron confirmed the instructions and added that Edmunds was told to do his best and beat as many runners as he can, whilst also stating that the rider had been made aware of the gelding having had a history of previous wind issues, which Edmunds acknowledged.
Barron also explained that Tidewell (GB) had been disappointing on Softish ground at his only 2 previous starts, and was hoping the drop back in trip to 5 furlongs and a switch to the all- weather surface would bring about some improvement.
Edmunds was suspended for 16 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that Tidewell (GB) was given full opportunity to obtain the best possible placing, in that he had failed to demonstrate any sustained period of real and substantial effort at a crucial stage of the race, when there was clear opportunity for him to do so down the inside rail.
Following the race, Clifford Lee reported that Emerald Lady (IR
