An enquiry was held into the running and riding of State Crown (IRE) ridden by Isobel Williams and trained by Evan Williams, which was slow into its stride, raced towards the rear throughout, before being appeared to be tenderly ridden, finishing fifth of five, beaten 19 lengths.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding appeared to be marginally lame on its left fore.
The rider stated her instructions were to ride the gelding handy but added that State Crown (IRE) was soon outpaced, which she felt in her opinion was due to the strong pace.
Williams further added that entering the back straight, she started to ask State Crown (IRE) for an effort to which the gelding remained one pace throughout.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and was satisfied with the ride.
Evan Williams contacted the Stewards and joined the enquiry via telephone.
He confirmed that his instructions were to race State Crown (IRE) handy.
He stated that he was disappointed the gelding wasn’t able to obtain a prominent position from the start but accepted this was due to the strong early pace.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Man Of Light (FR), placed third, lost its right fore shoe.
