They were brave enough to hold on to him and he did it nicely today. He can jump a fence too but we'll tip away over hurdles for a while. Once the ground is ok, he'll go for a novice hurdle and hopefully the handicapper won't be too hard on him now. Terence O'Brien, trainer
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Davids Charm, ridden by A. McCurtin, and trained by John J. Walsh. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. A. McCurtin, stated that his instructions were to give the horse plenty of light, sit in behind the leaders and win from there but not hit the front too soon. In the race itself the horse jumped a bit big early but was under pressure at all stages as he didn't travel. He felt the three horses in front stopped and his mount stayed on well and ran on in the straight. John J. Walsh, confirmed the instructions and that he wanted the rider to settle the horse having its first run. He felt he raced green and that in a bad race the others stopped. He stated that the horse was fit today. He expressed himself satisfied with the ride and he was happy with the horse which ran above expectations. The rider added that the horse felt sound throughout the race. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Davids Charm was blowing hard post race and had returned with a graze to his right hind cannon and a cut to his left hock. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards referred the matter to the Referral Committee under Rule 14 (ii).
