The Stewards noted that Orchestrated (IRE), jumped the first fence awkwardly causing Tom Buckley to lose his irons after the saddle slipped badly and the gelding was therefore pulled up as a result.
An enquiry was held to consider the circumstances which led to Regaby (IRE) being pulled up by Liam Harrison after jumping the first fence.
Harrison and the representative of Ian Williams were interviewed.
Harrison explained that shortly after the field jumped off, he observed the right-side sheepskin cheekpiece become detached and fall to the ground.
Upon this occurring Harrison immediately became concerned, as the bit was very loose in the geldings mouth and he was seeking to ascertain whether his ability to steer and control Regaby (IRE) had been compromised.
On the approach to the first fence, he suspected that the right-side pin on the cheekpiece strap of the bridle had released, causing the bridle to loosen considerably.
Harrison further stated he jumped the first fence on the basis that he couldn’t be certain what the issue was and whether it was safe for him to continue or not, however upon landing it quickly became evident he had limited control of Regaby (IRE) and quickly pulled the gelding up.
Harrison also confirmed that neither in the parade ring, going to post or at the start, was there any indication of a pre-existing issue with the bridle or sheepskin cheekpieces.
Furthermore, after dismounting Regaby (IRE), he was able to verify that the right-side pin on the cheekpiece strap of the bridle had indeed released.
The representative of Ian Williams explained that he had been responsible for the fitting of both the bridle and cheekpieces on this occasion and he was satisfied that both the pin had been correctly in situ and the leather strap fitted through the keeper.
The Veterinary Officer subsequently reported that a post-race examination of Regaby (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Having inspected the bridle used on Regaby (IRE), the Stewards were satisfied that it was in a serviceable condition and noted their explanations.
