Formscan By Alan Magee - BUVEUR D’AIR is taken to join the likes of Istabraq, Hardy Eustace and Hurricane Fly and become the fourth horse to win the Champion Hurdle on more than one occasion in the past 20 years. The French-bred gelding is unbeaten in his last nine starts but arrived here last year by a rather circuitous route having started the season over fences. The decision to switch back to hurdling was handsomely rewarded not only by a decisive win 12 months ago but also a further three Grade 1 victories. Former Champion Faugheen looked back to his imperious best when returning after a long lay-off in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown in November but the wheels came off at Leopardstown over Christmas and he was still below par when runner-up last time at the same venue. The application of cheek-pieces is an interesting ploy. Willie Mullins has four runners in total and the quirky but talented Yorkhill is something of a cliff horse of mine. He’s won at the last two Cheltenham Festivals and I certainly don’t dismiss him lightly after just two chase outings over contrasting distances this term. Elgin has been supplemented and deserves his place in the line-up after beating Ch’tibello in the Kingwell at Wincanton last month.
For four-year-olds and upwards which are allotted a rating of 130 or more by the senior BHA Head of Handicapping following a review of the horses entered and taking account of races run up to and including the day prior to confirmation - horses who are not qualified for a rating in GB, IRE or FR may also be entered (such horses may be eligible providing the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse's racecourse performances up to and including the day prior to confirmation would merit a minimum rating of 130 - the decision of the BHA Head of Handicapping shall be final).
