He could have a trip to Galway now for another hurdle or a flat handicap. It's his third run in a week, but it takes at least two runs to get him ready. He's owned by two brilliant owners . Mike and Tony O'Brien . who are with me from the start and don't interfere and leave it with me. It's like a different track here. It used to be tight, but now it's a galloping track. The ground is nice. I was worried when I heard they were watering, but it's good to firm but safe ground. Denis Gerard Hogan, trainer
K.J. Quigley, rider of Kilcaragh Boy trained by Paul W. Flynn, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount made a respiratory noise at the second last hurdle. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Kilcaragh Boy, trained by Paul W. Flynn, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be Post Race Normal. Samples were taken for analysis. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Kilcaragh Boy, placed fifth, ridden by K.J. Quigley, and trained by Paul W. Flynn. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. K.J. Quigley stated that his instructions were to drop his mount out as he is keen at home and to do his best from there. He stated that he missed the break and couldn't lie up with the field, made a respiratory noise around the second last hurdle and made a mistake at the last, but got a second wind after the last and passed tired horses close home. He felt he had obtained his best possible placing. Paul W. Flynn, confirmed the instructions and stated that he got this horse cheaply from the Point to Point field. He said from what he saw of the Point to Points, Kilcaragh Boy wasn't staying the 3 miles as he was too keen, so he dropped him back to 2 miles for his first run on the track today and put a hood on him to see if he could get him to switch off. He added his charge obviously got the trip well and since he couldn't lie up with the field over 2 miles, he plans to step him up in trip in future. He further added the rider is inexperienced and he is trying to give him race riding experience and guidance but expressed satisfaction with the ride given the circumstances, except adding that his rider could be more forceful in the finish. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Kilcaragh Boy was Post Race Normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered by the trainer and they cautioned K.J. Quigley to be seen to show more effort in future.
