As a half-brother to Golan (2,000 Guineas winner and Epsom Derby runner-up) and Tartan Bearer (also second at Epsom) he wasn’t bred to be winning a two mile six hurdle at Ballinrobe but we’ll take it. Mark Michael McNiff, trainer
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer examined Hardy Man, trained by Denis Gerard Hogan, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be making an abnormal respiratory noise post race
The Stewards requested a report from Mark Michael McNiff, trainer, as to the apparent improvement in form of William Of Wykeham, placed first, as compared with its recent form. The trainer reported that his charge had raced far too prominent on his previous run and tired quickly as a result of this. He said his charge settled much better today and was allowed creep into the race which he felt had helped to bring about the apparent improvement in form. Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered
D.E. Mullins, rider of Scalino trained by Anthony Mullins, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount ran very free to the start
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Scalino, ridden by D.E. Mullins, and trained by Anthony Mullins. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.D.E. Mullins, stated that his instructions were to settle his mount as quickly as possible as the animal is a difficult ride and to do the best he could. He stated that his mount ran very free to the start and at times was almost out of control. He felt the animal needed to settle early in order to get the trip, but felt he had no choice but to make the running as his mount was forcing a gallop and continued to be a difficult ride until going out on the second circuit. He said that at this point, he gave the animal a breather, but his mount found nothing in the closing stages as a result of running too free early on. He concluded by stating that his mount was accidently fitted with an ordinary snaffle bit by a member of staff and need to be ridden with a chifney bit in future. Anthony Mullins, trainer, confirmed the instructions given and expressed his satisfaction with the ride given how difficult the animal was both before and during the race. He further added that his charge had shown this behaviour before both on the track and at home and was of the opinion that Scalino is capable of winning a race in future if he learned to settle
The Stewards also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer, who stated that Scalino was found to be blowing hard post race. Samples were taken for analysis. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanation offered
