An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Get Supreme (IRE), ridden by Patrick Cowley and trained by Brian Barr, which tracked the leaders before losing its position down the back straight in the final circuit, and thereafter was tenderly ridden to finish fifth, beaten 27 lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the trainer was interviewed on loudspeaker via telephone and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination revealed that Get Supreme (IRE) had an abrasion on its right fore but was sound and showed no other abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to ride the gelding in a handier position than in previous races with a view to Get Supreme (IRE) finishing its race off as it has been keen at home.
He added that from the third last hurdle he was holding the gelding together due to respiratory issues in the past, hence running in a tongue-strap, and despite this he felt he had asked Get Supreme (IRE) for sufficient effort.
He further stated that Get Supreme (IRE) may not have handled the undulating track on this occasion and would be recommending a step-up in trip.
The trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that the only footage he had seen of the race was the televised footage on his phone and he did not have access to all the views seen by the Stewards, however he was satisfied that Get Supreme (IRE) appeared to finish its race off better than previously.
The Stewards found the rider had intentionally failed to ask Get Supreme (IRE) for sufficient effort from the third last hurdle when the gelding appeared to have running left in him and made up significant ground from the back of the field, appearing to run on through horses down the home straight.
The matter was referred to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority and Get Supreme (IRE) was suspended from running in any race for 40 days.
