This was an interesting contest indeed with Well Tutored, in first time cheek pieces, making a welcome return to winning ways on a day in which he was fell fancied to do so. The winning trainer summed it up perfectly, ?I think today he probably had his ideal conditions with nice ground over 2m5f. He just had no rhythm at Gowran the last day (in the Thyestes), and I fitted the cheek pieces to concentrate him on his jumping.?
The Irish National was earmarked as a possible future target and while he won here by three and a half lengths it could be argued that he was left in the front too soon and idled ever so slightly and there may have been even more in the tank.
Mattock Ranger is proving hard to keep a hold off with a good run being often followed by a disappointment ? this was a good run and in fairness to him the heavy ground in the Thyestes could have had a lot to do with the poor showing on that occasion.
He was always prominent here and certainly didn't disgrace himself at all and it would be interesting to see how he would go in a race like the William Hill at Cheltenham on his favourable good ground.
The ever consistent Carrigeen Kalmia was running off a career high mark of 136 and back over fences after a couple of hurdle runs and she is likely to remain a consistent sort who still has races to be won.
After making all to win the Grand National Trial under top weight at Punchestown a month ago, connections of Chelsea Harbour adopted different tactics here and he was in rear throughout before finishing well to do his Grand National claims no harm and a more positive ride may have seen him closer at the death.
Forget The Past now looks set to stay at home after finishing sixth here and disappointing his trainer Michael O'Brien who stated, ?he didn't run well enough to warrant going to the Ryanair and he has been handicapped out of the English National so we might look at the Irish National now where he would be better treated.?
Last years Aintree Grand National third Slim Pickings will now go straight back to Liverpool after his fifth placing here.
