An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Sunrise Ruby (IRE), ridden by Nico de Boinville and trained by Nicky Henderson, which tracked the leaders in the early stages and was given a reminder exiting the back straight before appearing to be tenderly handled in the home straight to finish fifth, beaten by 14¾ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race.
The rider stated that his instructions had been to jump out handy behind the leaders and ride his race from there.
He added that after jumping the first hurdle Sunrise Ruby (IRE) appeared to be struggling in the Soft ground which in his opinion was riding tacky, a fact he had reported as Scales, resulting in the mare’s head coming up halfway down the back straight.
He further added that after still not feeling the mare was travelling completely comfortably exiting the back straight, Sunrise Ruby (IRE) had come back onto the bridle turning into the home straight and he felt that he was staying on past tiring horses and had obtained the best possible placing.
His explanation was noted.
The winner, Fair Kate (GB), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Chepstow on 20 November 2019 where the mare finished seventh of the eleven finishers, beaten by 19½ lengths.
Tom Lacey’s explanation that Fair Kate (GB) had benefitted from the application of the first-time tongue strap was noted and the mare was routine tested.
