Following the race, Henry Brooke reported that Never A Word (USA), placed fifth, was hampered by a faller at the second last hurdle.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Agentleman (IRE), ridden by Kane Yeoman and trained by Peter Winks, which after racing in a midfield position throughout, appeared to be tenderly ridden until approaching the second last hurdle before staying on to finish fourth of ten, beaten 24¾ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and being a 7lb claimer, Yeoman was offered the opportunity to have someone accompany him in the enquiry but declined.
The rider stated that his instructions were to take his time on the gelding before improving his position in the home straight, with a view to obtaining the best possible placing.
He added that Agentleman (IRE) was keen early and consequently didn’t jump the first two hurdles with much fluency, however despite his mount being more prominent than intended, it had settled into a much nicer jumping rhythm thereafter.
He further added that he was unconcerned when the leaders quickened away from him in the early part of the home straight, as Agentleman (IRE) was still travelling well within himself, however in his opinion after being asked for an effort approaching the second last hurdle, and being badly hampered by a faller at that hurdle, the gelding had emptied out quickly and only stayed on at the one-pace through to the finish line.
