An enquiry was held into the running and riding of GLENAMOY LAD, ridden by Jason Watson and trained by Michael Wigham, which having missing the start by a considerable distance and raced in rear throughout, stayed on under a hands and heels ride in the straight to finish sixth of eight beaten by 97 lengths. The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities. The rider stated that his instructions were for the gelding to be held up, as is his established racing pattern and to deliver a finish as late as possible. Watson explained that after being very slowly into stride, a fact which he reported at scales, he was reluctant to ride the horse too aggressively in order to make up the lost ground, as he had been warned by the trainer that the gelding can be keen in his races. He added that by the 3 furlong marker he was in touch with the field after GLENAMOY LAD had commenced to over-race particularly when the pace steadied mid-race, but again he was reluctant to improve his position by going wide at that stage of the race bearing in mind his explicit instructions. He further added that he therefore waited until straightening to ask GLENAMOY LAD for its finishing effort, and did not resort to the whip as he considered the gelding was giving everything and had expended plenty of energy early in the race getting back into contention. The trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was dissatisfied with manner in which Watson had ridden the gelding. Wigham was disappointed that GLENAMOY LAD lost all chance by missing the start hopelessly, and would also like to have seen the rider display more vigour in the home straight. He added that the gelding had coughed on several occasions in the wash-down area post-race, something that he attributed to the kickback on the Standard to Slow surface. Their explanations were noted.
