Permission was given for Far Rockaway (GB) to be mounted in the chute and to go early to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Star Approach (IRE), ridden by Gabriele Malune and trained by Ismail Mohammed, which was slowly into stride and ridden in the rear from a wide draw before being tenderly handled in the home straight to finish eighth of twelve, beaten 10½ lengths.
The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the colt during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to ride Star Approach (IRE) positively from a wide draw, but when the colt was slowly into stride, he opted to drop in at the rear of the field rather than be trapped wide.
He added that Star Approach (IRE) was travelling well and he was able to make up some ground in the back straight, but he didn’t get the clearest of runs rounding the final bend when he hoped to follow the favourite through; and again half way down the home straight, which meant he was unable to ride a stronger finish.
The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions and, although he was disappointed that the colt didn’t finish closer, he was satisfied with the ride despite Malune being unable to follow the instructions having been slowly away.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Robert Havlin reported that Tenbury Wells (USA), unplaced, missed the break and Kieran Shoemark reported that Tolmount (GB), placed fourth, ran green.
