An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Carpool (IRE), ridden by Miss Isabel Williams and trained by Evan Williams, which was held up in rear throughout before staying on under apparent tender handling from approaching the home turn to finish third, beaten by 16 lengths.

The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported that an initial post-race examination of the mare, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities other than Carpool (IRE) had sustained a small superficial laceration on its left fore which in her opinion would not have affected its performance, and a second examination found no other abnormalities.

The rider stated her instructions had been to drop in on this step up in trip to 2 miles 4 furlongs, get the mare settled and to obtain the best possible placing.

Williams added Carpool (IRE) was keen for much of the first circuit due to the slow early pace and was outpaced when the tempo increased leaving the back straight on the final circuit.

She further added that in her opinion the mare did not respond to her urgings and stayed on one-paced in the home straight past beaten horses.

The trainer’s representative confirmed the instructions given and he was both satisfied with the manner in which Carpool (IRE) was ridden and that the ride accorded with the instructions given.

Isabel Williams was suspended for 16 days and Evan Williams was fined £3,500 for schooling and conditioning the horse on the racecourse in that Isabel Williams had failed to ride her mount in such a way that she could be seen to ask for timely, real and substantial effort to obtain the best possible placing.

Carpool (IRE) was suspended from running in any race for 40 days.

Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Diamond Reggie (IRE), which started second favourite and was pulled up, finished lame on its left fore.
