I thought the handicapper had this lad and I asked him to drop the horse a pound to get him into a 0-116, but it looks like he was right. The race cut up though - the favourite tipped up and it probably wasn't the strongest race. He is game, Mark (McDonagh) gave him a lovely ride and thanks to the McDonaghs who support me well and Lorraine (Mark McDonagh's mother) looks after the horses when they return home on breaks. I have to thank all the owners who all stood by me (during the suspension) as it was a tough end to the year. It was messy and I advised owners to send horses here and there, and thankfully I got them back. . My horses have been running ok, but I have been running a lot of ordinary ones too so we're thinning them out now. We are very busy, I have a lot of youngsters of my own which I hope to sell and have 15 point-to-pointers. We fancied our chances today. He got a bad fall (brought down) in Down Royal and it set him back a wee bit. We said we were going to have one shot at him (Psalm) and we weren't going to do the donkey work today. Ben said 'I'll have one go at him' and it worked lovely. What a genuine horse to go to battle with, he's been very good. It is something that we would always be thinking about - swapping the headgear around and bits and pieces. We took the headgear off him there for a couple of runs and he ran a couple of crackers. I just felt the last day he was waiting a bit for them, so thinking about it during the week we said we would put the cheekpieces on. He only had them on once. We just put Ben up. He's a lovely horse and had a couple of nice bumper runs. We knew he wanted a bit of better ground. He's still a baby, still learning on the job, and will be better over a little bit further, I think. There wasn't a suitable chase for him until Christmas but it was always the plan to go back over hurdles. He has won five races and Oliver and Marie are fantastic owners who leave me do my own thing - if there is a mistake made, it is due to me. The horse has built on promise and we let him improve away over fences. That has given him confidence and we are using his hurdle mark at the right time. we thought he’d have won a long time ago but I never lost faith in him. We started schooling him over fences a month ago and I thought this is his game, rather than hurdles. He had his hurdle mark (of 92) today. He let us down a lot of days over hurdles and I’m happy to keep him at this game now. He was very professional and I hadn’t brought him away schooling anywhere.
