A day of mixed fortunes, to be sure, for trainer Denis Hogan but 13/8 favourite Big Baby Bull provided some cheer when landing the opening apprentice claimer under Kyle McHugh.
It was the young rider's first winner and, having tracked the leaders on the seven-year-old, he produced his mount to lead in the straight and kept him going to beat Is That Love by half a length.
McHugh said: "the race went lovely and while we wanted to make it or sit in second or third, it went very well and he quickened when I asked him. There was a few dangers coming up on my outside but he put his head down and went on very well.
"I'm from Ballybofey in Donegal, did loads of pony racing, am 17 and based with Denis Hogan. I'm delighted."
For Hogan, it had been announced earlier in the day that he has had his licence suspended for three months, from August 1st, and been fined €5,000 after one of his horses tested positive for a prohibited substance.
Hogan remarked: "that was brilliant for the kid (McHugh) - he is with me all winter and while he needs experience, is after gaining plenty lately. I had this race in mind for him when I saw the entries and saw it was an apprentice race.
"Kyle has had a few spins but they were on longshots and this is the first time he has had a proper chance. I could have put Dan King on the horse but thought everyone needs a chance in life and gave him the ride. He was a lovely horse for the job, we own him ourselves and is basically for that.
"I said to make the running but he didn't get away although he didn't panic and did everything lovely."
In claiming news, the winner was retained by Denis Hogan after a successful friendly claim while runner-up Is That Love was claimed by owner/trainer James McAuley for 8,000 Euros.
